How to go from ME to WE to IMPACT
I've noticed a new emerging need that potential clients are reaching out to me for: developing deep executive-level confidence, learning to transition from an individual focus (ME) to a collective perspective (WE), and then, ultimately, to achieving a deep sense of impact (OUTCOME).
There is a particular stage in your career where you:
- Have excellent technical knowledge and have developed some skills for working with and leading others.
- Are strongly results-oriented.
- Are concerned with how you are perceived, often worrying about others' opinions of you.
During this early stage of leadership development, your primary focus is on YOURSELF: your expertise, the respect you get from peers, and the approval you receive from your boss/stakeholders.
"I like to outsmart people" said recently a high achiever leader, Ivy League-educated, working at a highly respected tech giant.
"But I'm not proud to admit it. I'd be much happier if I were genuinely excited about the work itself, and if I empowered my team".
At this stage, you don't find true fulfillment in the problems you solve.
The key to advancing to the next level is to shift your focus to WE.
Ask yourself, "How can I support my team?"
The next level is about focusing on the OUTCOME.
Ask your team "What are we here to create? What impact do we want to have? How can we collectively achieve it?"
The paradox is that when your focus is on your team and the impact you want to make in the world, you'll actually feel more confident and happier.
You'll feel grounded, with your roots extending far and deep. This is what genuine confidence entails, and it's the key to realizing the impact you are here to make.
