INTENTIONS

As I was driving from my daughter’s school this morning, it was raining and I thought I should just go home. I was wearing my flip flops, ready to go for a run at the beach. I was thinking about that thin line where the water briefly kisses the sand and them retreats, going wherever it is that waves go.

Perhaps it was that image that made me drive to the beach, and i thought if nothing else, I’ll just look at the ocean, the movement of the waves, the flight of seagulls and crows, the running of the little snowy plovers. As it happened, the rain stopped on my way to the beach. The sun showered me with wild, glittery light, as I made my way along the beach in my usual slow pace. I unplugged from my headphones at some point to hear the ocean, but for the most part all I heard was the chatter of a crowd of thoughts visiting me.

My head often becomes a town square where so many thoughts gather. At times they cleared away, and for a few brief moments the town square got quiet. I got to really hear the ocean, and was surprised by its loud, beautiful roar. One revelation that came to me after one of those brief beautiful clarity moments, was that one day I’ll be a published writer.

It occurred to me, right after that thought, that intention is much like buying that flight ticket to go to Croatia earlier this summer. I couldn’t imagine actually being there, but packed my bags, did some research, messaged friends who’ve been there, and eventually I found myself in the insanely beautiful Plitvice Lakes park. I could have of course just bought the ticket and not do any of those things, which would have obviously be such a stupid thing to do.

An intention works in the same way. We buy that ticket, we do some work, and eventually we find ourselves getting to that place we couldn’t quite conjure in our imagination. We can set intentions and never follow through, but why not go all the way? May we all have the imagination and courage to set wild, beautiful intentions, and may we all have the bravery and discipline to follow through!
