Strategies to Create an Amazing Year

In my last newsletter I shared how focusing on what’s within your control and influence can help you stay grounded and intentional.

This week, I’m sharing tips on creating a vision—your own North Star to guide you.

I remember coming back to the States after a year of living our dream of traveling through Europe with my family and homeschooling our daughters in my parents’ farmhouse in Romania. I found myself sobbing on the couch in our living room, feeling unsure about what to do next.

Have you ever achieved a big goal and then felt at a loss? It’s a weird yet common feeling, referred to as the "arrival fallacy"—the idea that achieving a major goal can leave you feeling lost because you've been so focused on reaching that destination that you haven’t considered what comes after.

I had no clear plan for the future. What I did have, though, was a longing—a vision of more time with my daughters, more freedom, and less of the stress that came with my corporate job.

The steps forward weren’t clear. I started freelancing and, slowly over the next three years, I discovered coaching.

Your unique path is never fully visible. You set a vision, goals, and you adapt as you go.

One client shared her vision beautifully:

My vision is to be a leader in my field, using my expertise to create positive change in the world. I will work towards developing my skills and building meaningful connections with others in my industry.

Here are other personal vision examples:

“My vision is to live a life of balance and harmony, where I am able to pursue my passions while also prioritizing my physical, emotional, and spiritual health. I will work towards creating a lifestyle that allows me to thrive in all areas of my life.”

“I envision a future where I am a successful entrepreneur, using my creativity and innovation to make a positive impact on society. I will strive to build a business that aligns with my values and creates opportunities for others.”

Reflect on what you truly want

It’s totally normal not to have complete clarity about what you want. In fact, most people don’t. But you probably know how you want to feel, what brings you joy, and what inspires you.

Creating a vision begins with pausing and listening deeply to your intuition. Connect to the part of you that’s calm, grounded, and wise—the part that knows who you are at your core and how you’d love your life to unfold next.

Take some time to reflect on these questions:

  • If anything were possible, what would I love to create or experience this year?

  • What would bring me joy in my professional life? What impact do I want to make?

  • Who do I want to work with, and how do I want to collaborate?

  • Who am I becoming?

  • What inner state do I most desire—peace, joy, confidence, alignment?

  • What self-care routines will support my physical and emotional well-being?

  • Who are my true allies, mentors, and companions on this journey?

Add anything else you’d like to make this year your best one yet. Think about your spiritual life (what qualities are you cultivating?), social life (who do you want to spend time with?), creativity/fun (hobbies, traveling), and your physical environment (how can you make it cozy?).

Bring your answers together into a single, affirming statement. Then read it out loud, with commitment: “This is the vision I have for myself.

Feel the sense of joy and inner power that comes from you committing to what matters to you.

Write it down somewhere you can see it every day—maybe on a piece of paper taped to your wall or as a weekly reminder on your Google calendar.

Share it with your closest, most supportive friends.

Reflect on what you no longer want

In nature, for a plant to thrive, it needs to be pruned. Think of a rose bush or a grapevine. It gets cut back significantly—and that’s how it thrives.

To create space for your vision, let go of what no longer serves you. Greg McKeown calls this “the disciplined pursuit of less.”

Create a ‘Not-To-Do’ List:

  • What commitments, habits, or relationships no longer align with the life you’re building?

    Where can you say “no” to create space for your most meaningful “yes”?

This is such a refreshing exercise. It helps you lovingly uphold your boundaries and protect your dreams. By letting go, you’re opening the door to something greater.

Take That First Step

Remember, every big accomplishment starts with the decision to try something different. Be brave, and take that first step.
