COMPARING OURSELVES WITH OTHERS: A DRAINING HABIT

Comparing ourselves to others might seem intuitive and even desirable to fuel our ambition. And yet it drains us so much more than it energizes us. It judges all we do in the context of ever evolving synthetic, self projected, superficial views of what others do. It creates the “I should do more, why can’t I do more?”. It’s hurting us to put ourselves down. Let’s be more gentle and careful with ourselves.

We don’t know what’s behind other people’s “success”, nor do we need others’ success to fuel our vision. In fact, comparing ourselves with others distracts us from our real vision. It robs us of the precious creative energy we need so we can discover and follow through on our own inner goals.

It’s just another powerful self block that stands in the way of walking on our authentic Path. It’s also an excuse for not investing our energy in bringing our vision to life. It takes so much discipline AND self care AND a higher consciousness to not compare ourselves with others.

So, how do we go about ditching comparison?

We become aware that we do it, we admit that we do it, and we make a commitment to looking inside rather than outside for inspiration. Will we ever get rid of this damaging habit? Yes, it’s doable. Will it happen by next week? Not entirely. But when we resist the temptation to compare and put ourselves down, it’ll feel so empowering that we’ll want that beautiful feeling again.
